No matter how often I visited, there was always something exciting about the lake. Bigger than anything else I had ever known, it was as vast as I imagined outer space. However great as it was, the edges were mine. From the shore to the buoys marked No Swimming Past this Point, that was home. But even in that safe space, Lake Michigan could remind me of its true size and my place in it. Even in such depths, nothing stays hidden forever. On the days when fish kills plagued the lake, the shores were choked with bodies. My brother and I would wade through the glassy-eyed corpses until we reached the open water. These fish kills were mostly caused by pockets of industrial pollution being stirred up in the water — an occurrence that continues to this day. We’d do our best to pick our way past, but it was impossible to avoid touching them. I still remember the feeling. Cold, slick, and still. The feeling of a secret brought to the surface. The Great Lakes have a long history of industrial pollution. In this work, my main focus revolves around what the EPA considers to be the Great Lakes Areas of Concern (AOCs). This list contains 27 rivers that flow into the Lakes, most of which are or have been areas of industrial and chemical pollution. They range from Michigan, Ohio, New York, Wisconsin, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Illinois. Since 1987 when the Great Lakes Quality Agreement was formed, the EPA has delisted only four of these rivers. The Great Lakes make up 95% of the US’s fresh water supply and are places of vast but fragile biodiversity. Due to climate change, the world’s fresh water is decreasing at an alarming rate — making conservation more vital than ever. Growing up, I always heard the old Michigan slogan, “Great Lakes Great Times” — a hopeful message meant to draw people to these wondrous bodies of water. My goals for this project go beyond raising the alarm and revealing the issues facing the Great Lakes. This work explores how people can help. I have hope that even in this political climate, we can work together to restore the Great Lakes and ensure a more sustainable future for all of us. M. due to its high propensity to catch fire. Since 1969, the river has burst into flames an astounding thirteen times. During the industrial boom of the 1950s and 60s, factories in Akron and Cleveland saw the river as an easy dumping ground for liquid waste, turning the river into a dangerous cesspool nearly devoid of all life. The river no longer bursts into flames. It no longer resembles a lifeless cesspool of toxic sludge. To a casual observer, the problems may seem to have simply vanished. It is this deceptive beauty that stands to undermine the river’s recovery. Life is returning. However, urban expansion, continued industrial activity, and overall poor water treatment methods threaten to disrupt this uncertain recovery. Bank erosion, human pollution, and run-off are among many of the challenges that must be faced before this river is fully restored. M. beauty of nature contrasted against the destructive impact of human progress. Images in the series depict natural landscapes with subtle human alterations, their machinations quietly blending into a living aesthetic. I pair these images with photographs from my family farm in Ohio where they have leased the land usage rights of our farm to a hydraulic fracking company. Although our farm has yet to be used for hydraulic fracking it is only a matter of time before it is. The impact of hydraulic fracking reaches far beyond the wells used to extract oil. There are steel mills that fabricate the pipes needed to penetrate the earth. The most consequential issue is the disposal of the chemical-laced post-fracking brine. A veritable cocktail of toxic chemicals and oil, this brine emits radiation and also has three times the salinity of standard salt water. This liquid is usually disposed of in a system of open-air ponds where it slowly drains back into the earth while emitting radiation. However many ponds are filled beyond capacity causing too much pressure in the old well which then creates earthquakes and contaminated aquifers. Even the mining of the silica sand poses a range of threats to environmental and human health, as it is collected using a method similar to mountain top removal which causes a variety of health complications for those people who breathe in the resulting dust. I’ve long been an opponent of hydraulic fracking, and my work Fracking the Land reflects this. There is a deceptive beauty that lives in the tension between the natural world and these quiet but destructive incursions. It is the goal of this project to capture that beauty, while revealing the coiled predator lurking beneath. M. In addition to being a place of great personal significance, the farm is also the place where my Grandma lives and has lived for most of her life –with a significant portion of my family living on the land surrounding it. My father grew up on this land and has a deep connection with it. Fracking on small family farms is becoming increasingly common. There are many factors as to why my family, and many like it make such a drastic decision. The idea that this industry while problematic to the environment, creates jobs in America and boosts the economy. One of the worst problems I have seen is ignoring the harm this type of oil extracting is causing the land. In this project I want to bring in a personal touch, which most people ignore in debates such as this.
